Soft Chapatis
Chapati is a flatbread made of whole wheat flour or Atta flour. It is a very popular flatbread in India. This recipe will hep you make very soft and delicious Chaptis. Although Chapatis are often made with whole wheat flour, I usually add all purpose flour to make soft chapatis. This recipe is my way of making Chapatis at home.
Ingredients
1 cup whole wheat flour (Atta flour)
1 cup all purpose flour
1 tbsp semolina
1 tsp melted ghee or olive oil
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup or enough warm water to knead
Directions
- Mix both the flour together in a bowl. Add the semolina and salt and mix well.
- Add the melted ghee and warm water little at a time and mix well.
- Knead it into a smooth and soft dough.
- Break the dough into small balls and cover it with plastic wrap or a wet cloth for 10 minutes. (Chapati dough will dry out if it is not covered. Make sure it is covered all the time.)
- Heat a skillet or a Roti pan over medium to high heat.
- Meanwhile roll out the dough balls into flat disks in a slightly floured surface
- Sprinkle some ghee into the Roti pan and put the rolled out Chapatis. In 10 seconds, sprinkle or brush some ghee and flip it. Cook the Chapatis until done. (Do not cook for very long time as the chapatis will be very hard and rubbery)
- Once cooked, transfer it into a plate and cover it with a foil. Stack Rotis over each other and keep it covered until served. Enjoy!
