Salami/Pepperoni Rose Buns

February 14, 2019
December is the best time of year for indulging in baking. Looking for something new for Christmas? These eye catching delicious baked rose rolls are stuffed with salami and cheese which taste so good. The Rose rolls are easy to bake for any special occasion or a special brunch. They look beautiful for a special table arrangement too.

Ingredients

For the dough

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 tbsp instant dry yeast
1 tsp salt

1 tbsp sugar
2 tbsp olive oil / sunflower oil
2 tbsp melted butter + extra for brushing
1 egg (slightly beaten)
2 tbsp dry milk powder (or use milk instead of water)
3/4 cup warm water

For the filling

12 Salami/Pepperoni (cut into halves; semi-circles)
Mozarella cheese
Grated Cheddar cheese (or any cheese you like)

For the egg wash

1 egg yolk
1 tbsp milk or water
1 tsp sugar

Directions
  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast with sugar, salt and warm water. Let it sit for 10 minutes or until it rise.
  2. Transfer the mixture into a large bowl and add the egg, olive oil and melted butter. Mix them.
  3. Now combine flour and milk powder together. Add this in three additions to the wet ingredients while mixing well. Knead the dough well until smooth for about 10 minutes.
  4. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it sit for 2-4 hours or until it doubles in size. (This rising will also depend on climate. You can also refrigerate the dough by putting it in an airtight bag, overnight)
  5. After the dough has risen, give a good punch to deflate the air and roll it out to form a large rectangle. (see picture illustrations)

  6. Then cut 4 long strips of 2 inch width.
  7. Place three salami pieces in each strip along with the cheese. Fold the dough strip into two and press it nicely to seal.
  8. Then start rolling from the edges to form a rose. Make sure to seal the edges pinching the dough tight.
  9. Place it on a greased muffin tray. Cover with plastic wrap and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
  10. Meanwhile preheat the oven for 200 degrees Celsius.
  11. Now apply the egg wash and bake the roses for 20-25 minutes.
  12. Once baked, apply melted butter on the hot roses and cover it with foil or a kitchen towel for 10 minutes. This will make your roses so soft. Enjoy!
